Attic Insulation

Most Victoria insulation companies will only tell you to get your loft insulated. However, they will not go out of their way to tell you why it should be protected. Before you consider insulating your attic, we advise you to get familiar with our "Attic Symptom Checker." If you identify one or two of the following symptoms, then you should call us immediately:
  • The roof has icicles
  • There is moisture in the ceiling
  • Your home is too warm during summer
  • The floor feels unusually cold
  • Your energy bill is all of a sudden high
  • The temperature in your attic is higher than that of the outside environment
  • The home feels drafty
  • There is frost in the attic
If you see one or two of the following options, give us a call, and we will provide a free attic evaluation. During the assessment, expect one or two of the following:
  • Q&A
  • A full attic inspection
  • Identification of any deficiencies
  • A recommendation report
  • Free Quote
A qualified attic insulation company should understand the importance of a ventilation system in the attic. A well-ventilated attic will reduce the amount of damage caused by trapped moisture, thereby preventing the property owner from incurring costly repairs.

We might recommend an insulation upgrade if you had already had one installed. The recommended attic insulation R-value should be R-59.2. If your sealing material is below this, then an upgraded is required.
A professional company should not upgrade the attic without checking for any air leaks because the leaks may cause leakage, increasing humidity levels in the attic or even result in a critter infestation. A well-ventilated attic has the following summer benefits:
  • Excess heat is expelled, reducing the strain on your air conditioning machine
  • Reduces mildew and wood rot that is usually as a result of moisture build-up in the bathroom and kitchen
During winter, your attic should offer the following benefits:
  • Reduce the risk of ice dams forming
  • Reduced chances of having wood rot, mildew, and mold

Roof and Loft Insulation

There is an old joke that exists in the insulation industry, "If you see a pigeon on your roof, then the roof needs to be insulated." The Pigeons on the roof are taking advantage of the heat lost from your attic. To insulate your roof, you will require a loft insulation service.

Loft insulation is a material installed within your roof either between rafters or joists. Its primary purpose is to slow down the transfer of heat between your house and the outside world. The end result is a cooler house during summer and a warmer home during winter. Other benefits that you will get by installing loft insulation are:
  • You will improve your homes energy rating
  • You enjoy reducing heating and cooling bills
  • You increase the resell value of the home

Note: If your house has no insulation, then it loses a quarter of its heat through the roof.
One main advantage of why we encourage residential property owners to have loft insulation is that unlike other sealing materials, this can last for more than 40 years without needing any upgrades.  The secret to loft insulation depends on the kind of thickness installed. The thicker it is, the more the saving effect.

If you plan on using the loft as a storage space, it will have to be fitted with boards to reduce the chance of damaging the sealant.

There are two ways in which we can increase the depth of your loft insulation:
  • We can install an insulating material that has already been bonded to a board
OR
  • Come with a carpenter who will help create a higher floor level to install the recommended 270mm of sealant.
Insulating a Loft That Stores Cold Water Tanks
If your cold water tank is stored in the loft, then do not worry as insulation is still possible. However, if done by a bad installer, your roof space will be freezing during winter. To prevent this problem, we will insulate both the loft and the water tank. If there are any pipes in the attic, they will also be sealed.

Different sealing materials have different use cases. You can decide to use plastic, natural materials, or even mineral wood. The goal here is to use the material that offers the most outstanding value to your home, depending on climate and location factors.

The following are examples of roofing materials that you can have installed:
  • Glass Wool: Can be blown in and is best used for sloping roofs
  • Rock wool: A mineral wool made of volcanic rock and is also preferred for sloping roofs
  • PUR Polyurethane:  Comes in plastic form and has an excellent insulating value
  • EPS: Comes in plastic form and is available in sheets. It, however, has less insulation value than glass wool.
  • Cellular Glass:  It is made of glass and can withstand high pressure
  • Paper flakes: It is made from recycled paper and can be installed as a blow in

Energy Audits for both Residential and Commercial Properties

We pride ourselves on being one of the few insulation companies in Victoria BC to conduct a comprehensive energy audit for residential and commercial properties. An energy audit is basically an inspection of your property to identify the exact place where there could be heat loss.

We do this by scanning your house while using infrared thermal equipment that identifies the problem with 99% accuracy. Over the years, we have become experts in energy efficiency consultations. We will go through your commercial property blueprint to examine the structure's architecture to identify any loopholes that may exist.
Keep in mind it is cheaper to build a commercial property with an energy consultant than hiring one after the project has been completed. Our consultation services will enable us to advise you on one or two of the following:
  • Type of insulating material to use
  • Whether an insulation upgrade is required
  • Type of Insulation to be used on the floor
  • Type of Insulation to be used in the basement
  • The kind of coating to use, e.g., air barrier, vapor barrier, or water barrier

Save your business thousands of dollars by having an energy audit done on your property today. Give us a call, and we will send a qualified energy auditor who will provide you with a free quote.
